Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a range of problems including depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol and drug use problems, marital problems, eating disorders, and severe mental illness. Numerous research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. CBT is based on several core principles and includes helping us identify faulty or unhelpful ways of thinking, learned patterns of unhelpful behavior and providing better ways of coping to relieve symptoms and becoming more effective in our lives.
For example, we often struggle with anxiety when we worry about past negative events or mistakes, we’ve made. We also tend to worry about the future which we often have little control over. CBT helps us stay in the present by encouraging us to focus on one day at a time and doing the “next right thing” moment by moment of each day.
