Sensorimotor Psychotherapy

We at Family Christian Counseling Center specialize in treating trauma in children, teens and adults. Our therapists have been trained in several treatment models. One such model is Sensorimotor Psychotherapy that integrates somatic (body-based) and cognitive techniques to help people resolve traumatic experiences and other psychological symptoms. This therapy is based on the knowledge that our bodies hold onto unresolved trauma and emotions. By working with the body and nervous system, we can release and process those experiences in a safe and supportive environment.

Techniques Used:

The following are some examples of techniques used in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy:

  1. Somatic Awareness: This involves increasing awareness of bodily sensations and physical reactions, such as muscle tension, breathing patterns, and posture. By learning to identify and regulate these sensations, individuals can gain a greater sense of control over their emotional responses.
  2. Movement and Breath Work: This involves using physical movement and breathing exercises to help individuals release tension and process emotions. Examples of this include gentle stretching, yoga, and deep breathing exercises.
  3. Mindfulness: This involves practicing present-moment awareness of thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations. By becoming more mindful, individuals can learn to observe and accept their experiences without judgment or reactivity.
  4. Imagery: This involves using visualization techniques to help individuals explore and process past experiences or emotional states. For example, a therapist may guide a client in visualizing a safe and nurturing environment to help them feel more grounded and supported.
  5. Attachment-focused Techniques: This involves working with clients to understand and address patterns of attachment that may have developed in response to early life experiences. By exploring these patterns, individuals can learn to form healthier and more secure relationships with others.

Overall, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy aims to help individuals develop a greater sense of safety, connection, and resilience by working with the body and nervous system to resolve past trauma and other psychological symptoms.
